Michelle Obama is the latest star to take on James Corden’s Carpool Karaoke, and she proved to be the coolest First Lady in history.
A teaser was released at the start of the week, before the full segment aired on The Late Late Show last night. It starts with James going on a tour of The White House, before being joined by Michelle in his car.
The First Lady is keen to jam out to some music in the car, particularly as it’s her first time to do so in over seven and a half years. What better song to groove to than one of Michelle’s favourites, Stevie Wonder’s ‘Signed, Sealed, Delivered’?! Michelle unleashes her inner fangirl as she reveals: “Did you know that Stevie Wonder is my favourite? I love Stevie Wonder! I think I know every Stevie song on the planet!”
In between songs, James asks Michelle what she will miss about the White House, and what she will “accidentally slip into her bag”. Whilst telling James not to steal anything, she replies saying that she will miss the people that she sees every day the most. On the subject of whether she’ll miss the 24 hour room service, Michelle states: “That’s nice, but the freedom that we’ll get in exchange for the privileges and the luxuries [is nicer].”
Back to the karaoke, and it’s time for Michelle and James to slay Beyoncé’s ‘Single Ladies’, with the First Lady proving that she knows all of the words as well as the iconic dance moves! Michelle also proved to be a member of the Bey Hive, stating: “we were making honey there in our Beyhive! We were making honey to put in our Lemonade!”
Later the pair discussed the Secret Service code names given in the White House. Michelle revealed herself to be called ‘Renaissance’, whilst Barack Obama is known as ‘Renegade’. Of course, James wanted in on this, suggesting Papa Smurf or Tiramisu as options for his code name.
Michelle also discussed her Let Girls Learn initiative. She stated: “We’re really focusing on trying to get girls around the world educated. Right now, there’s 62 million girls worldwide that aren’t in school for a variety of different reasons. So much could be corrected in the world if girls were educated and had power over their lives.”
My message to kids here is don’t take your education for granted, because there are girls around the world who would die to get the education that we have. They would do anything.
A performance of ‘This Is For My Girls‘, the Let Girls Learn anthem, followed and they were joined by a very special guest…none other than Missy Elliott! Missy features on the original track, alongside Kelly Clarkson, Diane Warren, Zendaya, Janelle Monae, Lea Michele, Kelly Rowland, Jadagrace and Chloe & Halle.
Of course, you can’t have Missy Elliott in the car without a sing-a-long of one of her biggest hits. Cue one of the best moments in Carpool history – Michelle Obama rapping ‘Get Ur Freak On’ in a word perfect manner, holla! Missy was clearly amazed at both Michelle and James’ knowledge of the song – it must have been the most surreal thing for her to witness!
Michelle getting her freak on is enough to place this Carpool Karaoke as one of the best we’ve ever seen. There is no doubt that Michelle is one incredible lady and a great sport for taking part and entertaining millions.
